Yeosu World Island Expo surpasses 1 million visitors

The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo has surpassed 1 million cumulative visitors just 36 days after its opening. While the event initially faced criticism regarding a lack of diverse content and poor exhibition quality, visitor numbers have increased recently due to reinforced performance programs and expanded free admission benefits. Notably, over 80% of recent visitors utilized free entry options.

Despite the milestone, concerns remain regarding the event's overall quality and operational efficiency. Critics have pointed to unclear visitor paths, insufficient exhibition depth in the island theme halls, and inadequate on-site management during crowded performances. Additionally, while attendance is rising, approximately 70% of the 403,000 tickets sold remain unused.

In conjunction with the expo, Yeosu will host the ‘2026 Culture Month Event’ from the 16th to the 19th. This government-sanctioned festival will feature various performances, experiential programs, and street arts at locations including the Marine Park, Ungcheon Waterfront Park, and the expo grounds, aiming to integrate the expo with broader city-wide cultural tourism.
