Yerba Mate and morning habits offer caffeine alternatives
Yerba Mate, a South American tea, is gaining popularity as a health-conscious alternative to coffee. Growing wild in Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, the plant contains up to 1.5 percent caffeine. It is noted for providing energy and alertness similar to coffee but without common side effects like nervousness or sleep disruption.
The tea is rich in nutrients, containing 27 percent more vitamins than green tea, including vitamins A, C, E, and the B complex, as well as minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium. Research suggests it may help increase bone density, particularly in postmenopausal women, and serves as a potent antioxidant to support immunity and metabolism.
Beyond dietary supplements, experts suggest other morning habits to manage energy levels and replace caffeine dependency. These include exposing oneself to natural daylight to regulate circadian rhythms, staying hydrated with water, and engaging in light physical movement such as stretching or walking to stimulate the body after sleep.
