Armenia faces energy development goals and regional water safety concerns

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has designated the Vardenis community as a future hub for renewable energy, citing significant wind and solar potential. However, critics point to the loss of the Sotk wind farms to Azerbaijan following the 2020 war. The Zod Wind company, which operated wind farms in the region with state licenses, lost its business when Azerbaijani forces reached the site, leading to a $5 million damage claim against the Armenian government.

Separately, in the Syunik region, residents of the border village of Tsav have been living under emergency conditions for approximately one month due to water contamination. The Ministry of Health reported that mercury levels in water samples from households and local sources exceeded permissible limits. Despite repeated testing, various state agencies—including the Ministry of Health, the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, and the Investigative Committee—have provided conflicting or circular responses, leaving the cause of the contamination and the safety of the water supply unresolved.
