Yes We Can Clinics ordered to improve after IGJ investigation

The Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) has identified significant deficiencies at Yes We Can Clinics (YWCC) following an investigation into the quality of care provided to youth and young adults. The probe was prompted by a television broadcast and nearly 30 complaints from patients, parents, and medical professionals.

Key findings include the unauthorized use of coercive measures and restrictions on freedom, such as seizing mobile phones and limiting contact with parents, without a proper legal basis. The IGJ noted that these measures were applied standardly rather than as a last resort. Additionally, many young clients reported that the treatment felt intense and harmful.

The inspectorate also raised concerns regarding the use of unregistered staff and counselors. The roles and responsibilities of these individuals, including peer support workers, did not always align with national healthcare guidelines. Furthermore, the clinic utilized unapproved ‘out-of-the-box’ interventions that could negatively impact clients.

Despite these findings, the IGJ expressed confidence in the improvements the clinic has since implemented to address these shortcomings.
