Yetunde Wunmi reflects on NDLEA arrest and loss of child

Nollywood actress Yetunde Wunmi has reflected on two significant personal tragedies: the death of her only child and her 2006 arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Wunmi detailed her 2006 arrest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to travel to London. She was charged with cocaine trafficking, involving 92 wraps of the substance, and was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison or a one million naira fine. After admitting guilt, she served a two-year sentence and was released in 2008.

The actress described the arrest as her ‘only regret in life,’ noting that it resulted in the loss of her privacy, popularity, and various friendships. She also spoke about the profound grief of losing her son at the age of one year and 10 days, citing difficult circumstances regarding her former marriage at the time of his passing. Wunmi credited the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (ANTP) with helping her rebuild her career.
