Yeury Rodríguez killed in San Carlos shooting sparks security calls

Yeury Rodríguez, a young basketball player for Club San Carlos, was shot during an apparent robbery in the San Carlos district of Santo Domingo on Sunday. According to witnesses he was intercepted by a man on a motorcycle, forced to hand over a chain and an ring, and was subsequently shot. He ran to a nearby alley seeking help but succumbed to his injuries before reaching a health centre.

The National Police’s Central Investigation Directorate has opened an investigation and identified several suspects, while community members are demanding increased patrols and stronger measures against crime in the area. Rodríguez’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at the Cristo Salvador cemetery.
