Yiddish language and Isaac Bashevis Singer featured in new essay collection
The essay collection Viejas verdades, nuevos clichés, published by Acantilado, explores the history and cultural significance of Yiddish, the millennium-old language of Ashkenazi Jews. The language reached its peak in Central and Eastern Europe before the Shoah, when many speakers were deported or forced to emigrate to the United States, the Americas, or Palestine.
The decline of Yiddish was further accelerated by the establishment of the State of Israel and the adoption of modern Hebrew. The text notes that while Yiddish and Ladino face potential extinction, the deep cultural attachment of Jewish communities may preserve them.
A central figure in Yiddish literature is Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer, who was born in Poland and wrote his entire body of work in Yiddish, despite supervising English versions of his texts.
