Yin family political donations face scrutiny over alleged Chinese ties

The Yin family, wealthy California McDonald's franchise owners, has donated over $4.4 million to prominent politicians, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris. The donations have drawn scrutiny due to alleged links between the family and Chinese influence operations.

Newly released FBI files indicate that family patriarch Chei Chen Yin (C. C. Yin) was a former professional associate of Christine Fang, an individual previously investigated by the FBI as a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Additionally, national security experts have documented interactions between Yin's brother, Henry Yin, and the United Front, the Chinese government's foreign influence wing.

Henry Yin has previously served as an advisor to U.S. Representative Ro Khanna and was involved in coordinating Governor Newsom's 2023 visit to China. While investigators and security experts express concern that such donations may be used to disincentivize leaders from noticing foreign interference, there is currently no evidence that the Yin family has been co-opted by the Chinese government. C. C. Yin has stated that he loves America and condemns foreign interference in U.S. democracy.
