YÖK calls on Turkish universities to support 'Terror-Free Turkey' goal
The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has issued a formal directive to all Turkish universities regarding the 'Terror-Free Turkey' initiative, a goal introduced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. YÖK President Erol Özvar requested that academic institutions contribute to this process through scientific research, panels, conferences, and workshops.
The directive specifies that universities should examine the initiative across six key dimensions: social, economic, legal, political, cultural, and security. The aim is to use academic expertise to support national unity, peace, and social integration.
In related statements, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin emphasized that the responsibility for the success of this process now rests with public authorities and civil society. He warned that any further sabotage of the initiative could lead to significant pessimism regarding future efforts to resolve the issue. Additionally, former Minister Hüseyin Çelik noted that for a 'Terror-Free Turkey' to be sustainable, the process must move beyond security measures to include robust democratic and legal frameworks.
