Üyük garlic receives geographical indication registration in Çorum
Üyük garlic, produced using traditional methods in Üyük village of Çorum, has been officially registered as a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. The product received registration under the designation of origin (mahreç işareti) with registration number 1906.
The registration process was part of the ‘Çorum is Developing with Geographical Indicated Products Project,’ supported by the Middle Black Sea Development Agency (OKA) and the Çorum Governorship. The Çorum Commodity Exchange submitted the application, which was bolstered by scientific tests and analyses conducted in collaboration with the Hitit University Scientific Technical Application and Research Center (HÜBTUAM).
Known for its white outer skin, light purple and pink clove skins, and long shelf life, the garlic represents a generational production tradition where farmers select healthy cloves from their own harvests for seed. The certification aims to protect the product's unique characteristics and boost its recognition within the local economy and gastronomy sector.
