Yüksekova’s mountain road reopens, exposing summer car tunnels

After 45 days of intensive snow‑clearing work, the 17‑kilometre İkiyaka Dağları and Sat Gölleri road in Yüksekova, Hakkari Province, was reopened to traffic on 1 August. The effort was led by the Yüksekova Şantiyesi under the direction of Yüksekova İlçe Özel İdare Müdürü Kerim Bulut, who praised the crews for clearing deep snow and tunnel‑like accumulations.

Despite the summer heat, the high‑altitude area still hosts natural snow tunnels up to four metres thick. Visitors and locals alike are walking the newly opened route and exploring the icy passages, a phenomenon highlighted by Yüksekova Ziraat Odası President Perviz Geçirgen, who noted that the region experiences “two seasons at once.” The persistent snow continues to feed local water sources throughout August.
