Yle celebrates 100 years of public service in Finland

The Finnish public service broadcaster Yle is celebrating its centenary, marking 100 years since its inception as Suomen Yleisradio. As the organization reaches this milestone, discussions have emerged regarding its strategic priorities and its role in a modern, competitive media market.

Former Yle CEO Arne Wessberg emphasized that the survival of public service broadcasting depends on its continued relevance to society. He argued that Yle must provide a diverse mix of news, information, drama, and entertainment to help citizens remain well-informed. Wessberg noted that Yle maintains a strong position in traditional media and has seen significant growth through its digital platform, Yle Areena.

However, some critics have raised concerns about recent shifts in coverage. While Yle's mission includes monitoring areas that are not commercially profitable, there has been scrutiny over the decision to eliminate Finland’s only Africa correspondent in favor of an additional US correspondent. This move has been questioned in the context of the geopolitical importance of the Global South.
