Yle to celebrate 100th anniversary and 45 years of Teletext in 2026
The Finnish broadcaster Yle is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary in autumn 2026, alongside the 45th anniversary of Yle Teletext, which launched in October 1981. The anniversary theme, ‘shared moments’, focuses on connection and belonging.
To mark the centenary, Yle plans several initiatives, including the minting of a dedicated 2 Euro coin, a tour bus visiting all 19 regions of Finland, and a large birthday celebration at the Veikkaus Arena on September 5, 2026. An exhibition will be hosted in September and October 2026 to showcase teletext art. Yle has issued a call for entries for teletext-based artwork, accepting various formats such as TTI and EP1 files.
Historically, Yle’s development was closely linked to the infrastructure provided by the postal and telegraph services. Since its first broadcasts in 1926, the expansion of radio and later television relied on the networks maintained by the Post and Telegraph Administration to connect studios to transmitters and listeners across the country.
