Ylfete Fanaj nominated for second term in Lucerne government

Ylfete Fanaj has received unanimous support from the members of the Lucerne city Social Democratic Party (SP) to run for a second term in the Lucerne Cantonal Government. Fanaj, who currently heads the Department of Justice and Security, was nominated by 55 party members for the 2027 cantonal elections.

The final nomination will be decided by the extraordinary congress of the Lucerne Cantonal SP, scheduled for September 24, 2026. Fanaj, who has Kosovar roots, made history in 2023 as the first woman of Kosovar descent elected to a Swiss cantonal government.

Simon Roth, co-president of the SP for the city of Lucerne, praised Fanaj as a dedicated and powerful minister who works toward a safe, social, and just Lucerne. Additionally, the local party members recommended a 'yes' vote for municipal issues regarding the maintenance of the minimum wage and adjustments to firefighter replacement fees.
