YMCA Camp Chickami child killed in falling tree accident
An 8-year-old boy, identified as Mason Sundberg, died following a tree accident at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts. The incident occurred around 10:40 AM on Tuesday, August 18.
According to Wayland Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert, the accident involved a domino effect where a large tree fell and knocked down a second tree while children and staff were gathered in an open wooded area. The falling timber struck multiple people, including Sundberg and an adult camp counselor. The boy was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The counselor sustained minor injuries and has since been released from medical care.
The West Suburban YMCA, which operates the camp, stated that the facility will remain closed for the remainder of the week. Local officials, including the Wayland Fire Chief, expressed condolences to the family and the community.
