YMTC overtakes Samsung in NAND flash market share
Chinese semiconductor manufacturer YMTC has overtaken Samsung to become the market leader in NAND flash memory production. According to recent data, YMTC’s market share rose from 28% last year to 38.5%, while Samsung fell to second place with a 33.5% share. SK Hynix also saw a decline, dropping from 20% to 17%.
In response to this shift, Samsung is planning technological upgrades at its Xi'an facility, aiming to transition from 200-layer chips to V9 generation 286-layer chips. Samsung has already introduced V10 chips with over 400 layers to maintain a competitive edge in speed and energy efficiency.
Beyond NAND, YMTC is expanding into the RAM market. The company is preparing for mass production of LPDDR5X chips reaching speeds of 9,600 MT/s at its Fab 3 facility. YMTC is utilizing a 4F2 cell structure and its proprietary Xtacking vertical stacking technology to prepare for the industry's eventual transition to 3D DRAM.
