Nigeria: Religious endorsements and political donations spark debate

Several Nigerian political and religious developments have emerged. In Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf celebrated International Hausa Day, highlighting the language and culture as pillars of African unity. Meanwhile, the religious organization JIBWIS has called on its members to support President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections, a move commended by governors from Kano, Yobe, Sokoto, and Jigawa.

In Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni faced criticism from residents and activists regarding a N300 million donation toward a proposed JIBWIS religious university. Critics argued the funds should be prioritized for healthcare and education, specifically citing the lack of dialysis centers. The Yobe State Government clarified that the donation was a personal pledge by the governor and not from state funds.

In Kaduna, the Fityanul-Islam organization pledged support for Governor Uba Sani, citing his commitment to religious inclusion and the proposed establishment of a State Religious Commission.
