Yobe State expands education through university support and new school construction

The Yobe State Government is implementing several initiatives to strengthen the education sector at both the tertiary and secondary levels.

In the tertiary sector, the Yobe State House of Assembly has pledged to increase budgetary support for Yobe State University (YSU). Speaker Chroma Buba Mashio committed to facilitating access to interventions from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other agencies. YSU Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Bashir Tahir reported recent academic advancements, including the completion of accreditation for Medical Laboratory Science and Radiography, the establishment of a Faculty of Computing, and the sponsorship of medical doctors for postgraduate training in India and Malaysia.

At the secondary level, the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) plans to construct 50 new secondary schools and rehabilitate 225 existing ones. The project aims to improve access to education for girls through safe learning environments, digital skill programs, and the provision of 875 desktop computers across 35 schools. Additionally, the initiative includes conditional cash transfers to support girls transitioning between school levels, with payments linked to maintaining at least 70 per cent attendance.
