Yobe Teaching Hospital performs first hip replacement surgery

Yobe State University Teaching Hospital has successfully performed its first total hip replacement surgery. The procedure was conducted on a young man suffering from sickle cell disease who had developed avascular necrosis, a condition where bone tissue dies due to a lack of blood supply.

The surgical team was led by Dr Lawan Yari, alongside Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Manasseh Jonah, and Karumi Ibrahim. The operation involved replacing the damaged hip joint with an artificial one to restore function.

Dr Muhammad Gana, the Commissioner for Health, described the surgery as a landmark achievement, noting that such specialized procedures were previously unavailable in the state. He attributed the medical advancement to the support of Governor Mai Mala Buni, specifically citing investments in state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities. This follows another surgical milestone in May, when the Yobe State Specialist Hospital successfully performed a complex maxillofacial surgery on a patient with a non-cancerous jaw tumor.
