Yoga and gradual exercise support cardiovascular health

Yoga is emerging as a beneficial complementary activity for cardiovascular health. While it does not replace traditional aerobic exercises like walking or cycling, the practice combines physical movement with breathing and relaxation techniques. This approach can influence the nervous system, helping to reduce stress responses that impact heart rate and blood pressure.

Studies suggest that regular yoga practice may improve physical conditioning and reduce cardiac biomarkers. It can also assist in blood vessel relaxation and decrease sympathetic nervous system activity. However, yoga should be used as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, medical treatment or medication for hypertension.

For adults starting an exercise routine, especially those over 30, experts recommend a gradual increase in frequency, duration, and intensity. Health guidelines suggest aiming for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of intense activity per week, alongside muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days a week.
