Yoga and swimming recommended for senior health and joint mobility
Physical activity is essential for maintaining health as people age, particularly to combat the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. For individuals over 60, yoga is highlighted as an effective way to mobilize the entire body. Yoga instructor Judy S. Schnoebelen recommends various styles, including vinyasa flows for strength and cardio, as well as restorative practices to stretch and release muscle tension.
Swimming is also noted as an ideal activity for those over 50 to preserve joint health. Due to buoyancy, water immersion reduces body weight pressure on the hips, knees, and spine by up to 90%. Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that regular swimming can reduce chronic lower back pain intensity by nearly 50%. However, technique is critical; for example, improper breaststroke with the head above water can cause cervical hyperextension and exacerbate lumbar issues.
