Yoga retreats see rising demand driven by mental health and burnout recovery
The wellness tourism sector is seeing a significant shift toward mental health and stress recovery. According to the ‘State of Retreats 2026 Report’ by BookRetreats.com, 78% of surveyed travelers are interested in joining a yoga retreat within the next year, with search interest increasing by 15% year-over-year.
Data indicates that mental health and wellbeing (56%) and recovery from burnout (43%) are primary motivators for travelers. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger generations; 50% of Gen Z and 57% of Millennials cite burnout and stress recovery as key reasons for seeking retreats. Consequently, demand for restorative and slow-paced yoga styles is rising, with interest in nervous-system reset retreats increasing by 105% year-over-year.
Sri Lanka has emerged as a prominent destination for this style of travel, offering diverse environments ranging from tropical beaches on the south coast to the cooler hill country in areas like Ella and Kandy. The country’s established Ayurvedic traditions further complement the growing demand for holistic wellness experiences.
