Yoga sequence importance: balancing Uttanasana with Makarasana and Bhujangasana
Effective yoga practice relies on the proper sequence and balance of postures rather than just performing individual movements. Following the intense forward bend of Uttanasana (Paschimottanasana), which stretches the posterior body and activates abdominal muscles, it is essential to perform Makarasana and Bhujangasana to maintain balance.
According to the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Makarasana serves as a vital counter-pose and relaxation technique. It helps restore the spine to its natural alignment, aids muscle recovery, and calms the nervous system after the deep stretch caused by Uttanasana.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Ayush notes that while Uttanasana applies pressure to abdominal organs to stimulate digestion, Bhujangasana provides a complementary backbend. This sequence helps tone organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines, potentially doubling the benefits for managing issues like constipation and indigestion. Performing backbends after forward bends relieves pressure on spinal joints and restores flexibility.
