Yogi Adityanath and religious leaders criticize Rahul Gandhi over Manusmriti remarks

Indian political leaders and religious figures have criticized Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, following his recent remarks regarding the Manusmriti and its views on women.

During a youth outreach program in Maharashtra, Gandhi addressed the Manusmriti, stating that the text suggests women should remain under the authority of male relatives—specifically fathers in childhood, husbands in youth, and sons in widowhood. He described these provisions as shameful and urged students to “smash patriarchy,” asserting that women belong to themselves.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused Gandhi of denouncing India’s traditions and heritage, suggesting he is failing in his responsibilities as Leader of Opposition. Adityanath advised Gandhi to study ancient texts like the Atharvaveda and Matsya Purana to better understand the subject.

Similarly, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati criticized Gandhi for what he termed an “anti-Hindu religious mindset” and “malicious attitude” toward Sanatan traditions. The Swami argued that Gandhi presented verses out of context for political gain and contended that the cited passages refer to familial responsibility rather than the subjugation of women.
