Yogurt and gut health: Probiotic benefits and nutritional differences

Yogurt is widely recognized for its probiotic benefits, which can aid digestion, nutrient absorption, and gut microbiome health. However, its impact on the stomach varies by individual. For those with lactose intolerance or sensitivities to specific additives, yogurt may cause digestive distress, such as gas or bloating.

There is a significant nutritional distinction between conventional yogurt and true Greek yogurt. True Greek yogurt is strained to remove whey, resulting in a thicker consistency, approximately double the protein, and about half the lactose content of unstrained varieties. These characteristics may help ease lactose digestion and support the intestinal lining.

In contrast, frozen Greek-style yogurt is often categorized as a dessert rather than a functional health food. The freezing process and the addition of sugar can significantly reduce or kill the live bacteria necessary for gut health benefits. While high yogurt intake has been linked to lower all-cause mortality in large-scale studies, researchers note that the specific benefits of Greek yogurt specifically require more isolated human trials.
