Yogurt consumption offers significant gut and heart health benefits
Yogurt offers various health benefits, including improved digestion, immune system support, and potential reductions in heart disease and high blood pressure. A study published by the American Heart Association involving 2,000 participants found that consuming one cup of low-fat yogurt at least every three days could lower the risk of developing high blood pressure by more than 30 percent.
To maximize nutritional value, experts recommend choosing products with live active cultures and natural sweeteners like fruit or honey, while avoiding those with artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, or excessive preservatives. Greek yogurt and kefir are noted as particularly beneficial options due to their high protein and active culture content.
Additionally, health experts advise against discarding the thin, pale liquid that often collects on the surface of yogurt. This liquid, known as whey, is a natural byproduct of fermentation. Rather than a sign of spoilage, whey is highly nutritious and rich in protein, and stirring it back into the yogurt can enhance its nutritional profile.
