Yogyakarta authorities act on leather factory odor and bus smoke complaints
The Yogyakarta City Council (DPRD) conducted an unannounced inspection of PT Sinar Obor, a leather‑processing plant in Prawirodirjan, after residents of RW 12 and RW 18 reported a strong, foul odor persisting for three months and associated respiratory irritation. DPRD chair FX Wisnu Sabdono said the council will recommend halting operations and possibly closing the plant unless the company promptly improves its waste‑treatment system.
The Yogyakarta Regional Transportation Department (Dishub DIY) acknowledged that several Trans Jogja buses emit dense black smoke, attributing the problem to an aging fleet. Head of Transport Wulan Sapto Nugroho noted that about 74 % of the 140‑bus fleet is over seven years old, with some units up to ten years in service, and pledged continued maintenance and gradual fleet renewal while apologising to the public.
