Malioboro pedestrianization plan draws tourism industry feedback
The Yogyakarta regional government plans to transform the Malioboro area into a full pedestrian zone by November 2026. This initiative has received support from the Association of The Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (Asita) DIY, which believes the move will enhance the quality of the destination and improve public space.
However, stakeholders have raised concerns regarding implementation. Asita DIY emphasized the need for guaranteed access for tourists, particularly for groups, the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. They requested that the transition be gradual and integrated with broader tourism interests to balance preservation, mobility, and economic activity.
Similarly, the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) DIY noted that while the policy could improve Malioboro’s market segmentation and image, clear mitigation strategies are required for local businesses. Industry players in accommodation and dining sectors seek certainty regarding the impact on their operations to ensure the policy does not become counterproductive to the local economy.
