Sleman Regency requests review of social assistance eligibility rules
The Sleman Regency Government has requested clarification from the central government regarding social assistance (bansos) eligibility criteria. Local officials report that current central government policies are causing many low-income residents to be disqualified from receiving aid.
Sleman Regent Harda Kiswaya noted that one specific issue involves land ownership. Under the current system, individuals holding more than one land certificate are deemed ineligible for assistance. Kiswaya argued that this criterion may not accurately reflect a person's true economic status, citing cases where residents hold two small land certificates but remain economically disadvantaged.
In a recent digitalization program, approximately 66,000 residents applied for assistance, but only 29,000 were declared eligible. The local government is urging a re-evaluation of these mechanisms to ensure socio-economic conditions are more comprehensively considered.
