Yogyakarta experiences seasonal transition and drought impacts

The Yogyakarta region is experiencing a seasonal transition from the dry season to the rainy season. On Saturday, October 24, 2026, rain began falling across various areas of Yogyakarta City, including Giwangan and Umbulharjo. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) noted that while these rains are driven by local factors, they signal the shift in seasons. Residents are advised to remain vigilant against sudden weather changes and potential extreme weather, such as heavy rain or strong winds.

In contrast, the Kulonprogo Regency continues to face severe consequences from the prolonged dry season. The drought has led to water shortages and the drying of local rivers, such as the Kali Tedunan. The lack of moisture has caused vegetation to dry out, significantly increasing the risk of forest and land fires. The Kulonprogo Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that 86 land and forest fires have occurred in 2026, outnumbering building and residential fires.
