Yogyakarta frozen chili enters Japanese market

Frozen chili products from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, have successfully entered the Japanese market. The export initiative aims to meet the demand of approximately 266,000 Indonesian citizens living in Japan, with an estimated annual requirement of 1,227 tons.

Injapan Corporation, a company based in Bantul with production facilities in Gunungkidul, has conducted eight gradual shipments since June 2025. The total transaction value for these shipments is approaching Rp1 billion. Specific shipments included 7.9 tons in June 2025, 8.3 tons in April 2026, and 8 tons in August 2026.

To maintain access to this non-traditional market, exporters must adhere to strict international food safety and quarantine standards. Following the success of frozen chili, local businesses are looking to expand into other agricultural commodities such as aromatic ginger, ginger, and turmeric. The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has committed to assisting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in meeting the necessary certification and regulatory requirements for export.
