Yogyakarta hosts culinary and batik heritage festivals

Yogyakarta is hosting several cultural events aimed at preserving heritage and supporting local industries. The Mustika Rasa Festival, held at Alun Alun Selayan on August 29-30, 2026, focuses on Indonesian culinary diversity. The festival draws inspiration from the 1967 cookbook ‘Mustika Rasa: Resep Masakan Indonesia’ by President Soekarno, which documents traditional recipes from Sumatra to Papua. The event features approximately 100 MSME stalls offering food, fashion, and crafts, alongside free health services and entertainment.

Simultaneously, the Prawirotaman Festival 2026 held a ‘Contemporary Art Batik’ exhibition from August 21-23. The exhibition showcased around 50 unique batik works from 30 young artisans and several senior artists. The initiative aims to revitalize the Prawirotaman area as a batik center and encourage regeneration within the craft. Participants received training that combined traditional techniques with modern technological touches to foster artistic expression in the batik industry.
