Yogyakarta Marriage Rate Falls Sharply Over Five Years

The number of marriages in the Special Region of Yogyakarta has dropped dramatically, falling from 26,030 in 2020 to 18,432 in 2025 – a reduction of 7,598 ceremonies, or about 29.2%. The decline accelerated between 2020 and 2021, with a loss of 4,047 marriages, and continued at a slower pace thereafter.

Divorce filings have risen overall, reaching 5,202 cases in 2025 after fluctuating in previous years. While the total number of divorces fell slightly in 2023 and 2024, the latest data show an increase again.

The trend mirrors a national pattern: Indonesia’s total marriages fell from roughly 1.78 million in 2020 to 1.48 million in 2025, according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Analysts attribute the decline to changing social attitudes and rising living costs.
