KAI to import used Japanese KRL sets and integrate with INKA
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is implementing several strategic measures to address rising passenger volumes and aging infrastructure. The company has received approval from the DPR RI to import 23 sets of used electric commuter trains (KRL) from Japan. This move serves as a transitional solution to meet urgent demand while domestic production catches up, as many existing trainsets are over 40 years old.
To optimize the domestic railway industry, KAI is targeting a formal integration (inbreng) with PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) by January 2027. This consolidation aims to combine KAI’s maintenance facilities (Balai Yasa) with INKA’s manufacturing capabilities to improve efficiency and technological readiness.
In terms of infrastructure and service expansion, KAI plans to extend the Jabodetabek KRL routes to Cikampek and Cigombong by 2028 to reach a capacity of 2 million passengers per day. Additionally, the company is investing Rp1.1 trillion to install automatic portals at 1,404 level crossings by 2027 to enhance safety and reduce accidents. KAI Commuter has also begun reintroducing serviced CLI 225 trainsets on the Depok-Bogor line to alleviate peak-hour congestion.
