Malioboro Run 2026 attracts 8,000 runners to Yogyakarta

More than 8,000 runners participated in the Malioboro Run 2026 in Yogyakarta on Sunday, October 4. Organized by Bank BPD DIY under the theme ‘Culture on Track’, the event aimed to promote sport tourism by integrating athletic competition with the city’s historical heritage.

The race route was designed to showcase Yogyakarta’s cultural landmarks, including Malioboro Street, Zero Kilometer Point, the Yogyakarta Palace (Kraton), Pakualaman Palace, Tamansari, and Tugu Pal Putih. The event utilized the ‘Dwi Tunggal’ concept, representing the joint leadership of the Sultan of Yogyakarta and the Paku Alam, to highlight the region's special status.

Approximately 70% of the participants traveled from outside the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), providing a boost to the local economy. The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) reported a 10-20% increase in hotel occupancy due to the influx of visitors for the run and the upcoming Wayang Jogja Night Carnival (WJNC).
