Yogyakarta Tourism Office launches independent waste management program
The Yogyakarta Tourism Office is implementing the Paramita program (Independent Waste Management by the Tourism Industry) to address the environmental impact of rising visitor numbers. With over 11 million tourists recorded in Yogyakarta throughout 2025, the city faces significant waste management challenges.
Lucia Daning, Head of the Yogyakarta Tourism Office, stated that the initiative encourages businesses such as hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations, and souvenir shops to take responsibility for their own waste. This move aims to reduce the industry's reliance on municipal waste depots and align the city with global sustainable tourism trends, ensuring Yogyakarta remains a clean and comfortable destination.
