Yoko Morishita, 77‑year‑old Japanese prima ballerina, trains six hours daily

Yoko Morishita, born in 1948 in Hiroshima, is a Japanese prima ballerina with the Matsuyama Ballet. At 77 she remains the world's oldest active principal dancer, continuing to dance lead roles.

She follows a rigorous schedule of six hours of daily training, six days a week, and stretches even on her rest day. In January she performed the dual role of Odette‑Odile in Swan Lake, and she is preparing for the role of Clara in The Nutcracker, slated for November.

Morishita began ballet at age three after a doctor advised her parents to increase her activity. She joined Matsuyama Ballet in 1971, won the gold medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1974, and has appeared in roughly 200 performances with Rudolf Nureyev and danced alongside Margot Fonteyn.
