Yokohama International Horticultural Expo faces leadership changes and low ticket sales
The upcoming International Horticultural Expo (GREEN×EXPO 2027) in Yokohama is facing significant challenges as its opening approaches. The event has been hit by leadership instability following the resignation of Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka due to power harassment findings, and the dismissal of Agriculture Minister Kazuo Yanagi.
These leadership changes come at a critical time for public awareness. As of late September 2026, ticket sales reached approximately 2.6 to 2.9 million, which is less than 30% of the established targets. The loss of key figures has impacted the coordination of government exhibitions and press activities.
In an effort to advance preparations, the Expo Association has released a new venue map dividing the site into nine distinct zones across northern and southern areas. The updated layout includes specialized sections such as the 'Agriculture and Food Village,' 'Craft Village,' and 'Kids Village.' Planned interactive exhibits include a 'Bee Farm' for harvesting experiences and a 'Craft Garden' focused on traditional Japanese techniques.
