Yokohama Mayor faces resignation calls over power harassment findings

A third-party committee has officially recognized serious power harassment by Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka. The investigation found that the Mayor engaged in behaviors such as shouting at staff, throwing documents on desks, and using intimidating language regarding personnel matters, including comments about “purging” or “transferring” employees to exert control.

Following these findings, three major political factions in the Yokohama City Council—the Liberal Democratic Party, Komeito, and the Constitutional Democratic Party—have jointly requested the Mayor's resignation. Additionally, the Japan Innovation Party has indicated plans to submit a motion of no confidence.

The controversy has raised concerns regarding administrative governance and the potential for political maneuvering within the city government, as some observers question whether the allegations are being used as a tool for internal power struggles.
