Yokohama mayoral election: Atsumi Harasawa leads in polls

The Yokohama mayoral election, triggered by the resignation of former mayor Takeharu Yamanaka following a power harassment scandal, is approaching its vote on October 18.

Polling analysis indicates that newcomer and lawyer Atsumi Harasawa is leading the race, securing significant support from LDP, Komeito, Ishin, and Democratic Party for the People supporters. In contrast, former mayor Yamanaka faces a difficult campaign, with approximately 80% of voters stating they are considering the power harassment issue when deciding their vote. Former lawmaker Kazuma Nakatani is also struggling to consolidate support.

While Harasawa holds a lead, approximately 40% of voters remain undecided. There is also discussion regarding the possibility of a re-election; under the Public Offices Election Act, if no candidate receives at least 25% of the valid votes, a re-election must be held. This scenario has occurred in previous elections in Shinagawa, Ichikawa, and Sapporo when votes were heavily split among multiple candidates.
