The Spanish government has officially announced the candidacy of Yolanda Díaz, the Second Vice President and Minister of Labour, to lead the International Labour Organization (ILO). Díaz aims to represent Spain, Europe, the Global South, and the international community in her bid for the position.

Unai Sordo, the general secretary of the CCOO union, has expressed support for the candidacy, stating that Díaz could play a vital role in strengthening the ILO during a period of perceived attacks on multilateralism. Sordo emphasized the importance of the institution in establishing global labor standards that are eventually integrated into national legislations.

The election is scheduled for November 16, 2026, with the new Director-General's term set to begin on October 1, 2027. Díaz will compete against the current Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo of Togo, who is seeking reelection.
