Yolanda Díaz launches candidacy to lead International Labour Organization

Spain’s vice‑president and labour minister Yolanda Díaz has presented her programme to become director‑general of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Her platform calls for a rapid democratisation of the agency, greater representation for the Global South and new financing sources, including voluntary contributions and public‑private partnerships. Díaz highlights three strategic pillars: modernising international labour standards to address artificial intelligence and climate change, promoting decent work and sustainable enterprises, and strengthening cooperation for development. She critiques the ILO’s current financial and programme crises and proposes reforms to its governance and funding. The candidacy, announced on 23 July, is backed by a nomination letter from Spanish foreign minister José Manuel Albares and positions Díaz against incumbent director‑general Gilbert Houngbo of Togo.
