Yolanda Díaz steps back from Sumar leadership to chase International Labour Organization directorship

Spain’s deputy prime minister Yolanda Díaz has withdrawn from her role as Sumar’s main liaison in the government, delegating public communication to Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun and policy proposals to Social Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy. Sources say she is "totally out" of day‑to‑day government work.

Díaz is now travelling to the United States, China, Mexico, Senegal and to Geneva, where the International Labour Organization (OIT) is headquartered, to gather diplomatic backing for the OIT director election scheduled for November. Her bid marks a shift in Sumar’s internal dynamics after she renounced a repeat candidacy in February and handed over her national political duties.

If successful, Díaz would move from a key domestic political position to an international labour leadership role, a change described by insiders as a “moral leadership” shift rather than an active governmental one.
