Yolanda Díaz Targets Director‑General Post at the International Labour Organization

Spanish politician Yolanda Díaz, former minister of labour and vice‑president, has announced her candidacy to become director‑general of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The move follows an agreement with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and comes after Díaz announced she will retire from national politics at the upcoming general election.

Díaz’s political career spans more than two decades, beginning as an IU councilor in Ferrol, then serving as a regional deputy in Galicia, a member of the Spanish Congress, and finally as labour minister under the Podemos‑Sumar coalition. Her bid for the ILO leadership marks a shift from domestic politics to the international arena, where she would oversee the UN‑affiliated labour body if elected.
