In Chennai, the inaugural Yonex Sunrise All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2026 was used by Tamil Nadu's Minister for Public Works and Sports Development, Aadhav Arjuna, to announce a target of at least 15 Olympic medals for the state by 2036. The minister outlined plans for an Olympic Bhavan, dedicated offices for sports associations, specialised academies and world‑class training centres at the Nehru Stadium complex, as well as new academies in several districts. He noted existing infrastructure gaps compared with states such as Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat and pledged funding, coaching and international expertise to achieve the goal.
