Yong Hye-in faces scrutiny over ministerial nomination

Controversy is mounting over the nomination of Basic Income Party lawmaker Yong Hye-in as the candidate for Minister of Gender Equality and Family. Critics have raised significant concerns regarding her political background and the fairness of her appointment.

Former lawmaker Jang Hye-young criticized the nomination, labeling it an pursuit of privilege. Jang specifically targeted the legitimacy of Yong’s seat, arguing that her position was made possible through a satellite party system, which she described as a practice that undermines democracy. Jang characterized the situation as a contradiction where one side advocates for human rights while benefiting from systems that erode democratic principles.

Democratic Party lawmaker Song Young-gil also expressed skepticism, suggesting that the public may find the appointment difficult to accept. Song questioned the fairness of Yong intending to maintain her seat in the National Assembly while serving as minister, describing it as a double benefit or “sudden rise to success.” He further noted that such a move might not resonate positively with the 2030 generation, who may view the appointment as unfair rather than empowering.
