Yong Hye-in faces scrutiny over past 'extortion' remarks regarding U.S. investments

Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, is facing intense scrutiny following past remarks regarding South Korea’s investment commitments to the United States. Yong previously characterized the demand for $350 billion in U.S.-bound investment as “extortion” rather than legitimate investment, arguing that the terms imposed by the Trump administration were unreasonable and could risk national economic stability and foreign exchange reserves.

Opposition members from the People Power Party have questioned the appropriateness of nominating an individual with such a hardline stance on U.S. economic relations, suggesting that her appointment could signal the current administration's true intentions regarding the alliance.

In response to the controversy, the Democratic Party of Korea stated it is gathering internal and external opinions to evaluate her position. Yong has expressed that she takes the criticism seriously and intends to provide calm explanations to the public, while maintaining her position regarding the legality of holding both a parliamentary and ministerial seat.
