Yongin Mayor pushes to accelerate semiconductor projects

Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il has called for accelerating the Yongin semiconductor projects to maintain a global lead in the memory chip sector. Following the resolution of recent uncertainties surrounding the national industrial complex, the city aims to expedite land preparation and construction.

Regarding the Samsung Electronics advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex, the mayor noted that the first fab's operation has been moved up from 2030 to the second half of 2029. He emphasized the need for the government to resolve conflicts regarding power and water supplies to ensure the project stays on track.

Additionally, SK hynix is advancing its semiconductor cluster in Wonsam-myeon, with plans to complete four fabs by 2033. The mayor highlighted the importance of meeting the rising demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips.

To support this growth, the city is planning infrastructure expansions, including widening National Route 45 and developing various rail networks such as the Gyeonggang Line extension and the Central Region Metropolitan Express Railway (JTX).

Mayor Lee also expressed strong opposition to Gyeonggi Province's proposal to share corporate local income tax revenues, arguing that the tax benefits generated by the semiconductor projects should remain with Yongin to fund local welfare, education, and culture.
