Yongin Special City proposes splitting Seongbok and Dongcheon districts
Yongin Special City is pursuing a reorganization of its administrative districts by splitting Seongbok-dong and Dongcheon-dong into separate administrative units. To facilitate this process, the city is conducting a resident survey through October 12.
Both Seongbok-dong and Dongcheon-dong have been classified as ‘overpopulated administrative districts’ after exceeding 50,000 residents. As of late August, Seongbok-dong has a population of 54,723, and Dongcheon-dong has 51,186, including registered foreign residents.
The city noted that Seongbok-dong faces rising administrative demands in welfare and civil complaints due to high apartment density. Dongcheon-dong faces challenges regarding accessibility to administrative centers and difficulties in disaster response and snow removal, particularly in the Gogi-dong area.
If the split proceeds, Yongin’s administrative structure will expand from 39 to 41 districts. The city plans to finalize the new district boundaries and proceed with ordinance amendments based on the survey results and local conditions.
