Yongsan District Launches Intensive Heat‑Wave Protection for Vulnerable Residents
Seoul’s Yongsan District announced a focused protection program running through September 30 to safeguard residents at risk during heat waves. The initiative ramps up daily phone calls and in‑person checks for welfare recipients and households identified as heat‑wave vulnerable, increasing the frequency of contact from weekly or monthly to daily whenever a heat‑wave warning is issued.
The district will coordinate its efforts through a dedicated heat‑wave operations center involving multiple departments, while leveraging community networks, AI‑enabled care speakers, and IoT sensors to monitor health conditions in real time. Services such as medical referrals and rapid welfare support will be provided if a resident shows signs of heat‑related illness. Yongsan District mayor Kim Kyung‑dae emphasized that “summer heat poses a serious danger to isolated seniors and people with chronic illnesses, so pre‑emptive, thorough check‑ins are essential.”
